Shopping Safely this Holiday Season

Posted: December 06, 2012
When you are out shopping for the holidays, how often do you think of safety?  Do you hold your purse tightly at all times and keep your head on a swivel in case someone is lurking around the next corner?  Probably not.  There is no need to be paranoid when out searching for the perfect gift for your loved ones.  But it is wise to be cautious and take a few preventative measures to help ward off those would-be criminals from doing you (or your wallet) any harm this shopping season.

Keeping your purse close to you really is a good idea.  You should consider using one that has a zipper closure or a flap that has a latch.  Keep the flap opening towards your body and keep it closed at all times.  If you carry a wallet, do not put it in your back pockets.  Also, put a thick rubber band around it so it makes it more difficult for pick pockets to pull it out of your pocket.

Keeping cash on you is not really the best idea either.  If you can get away with using travelers checks or credit cards, they are much easier to trace if they are stolen.  Cash can disappear quickly with no recourse.  If you have to carry cash, don’t keep it all in the same place.  Split it up between your pockets so that if someone were to pick your pocket, they won’t end up with all you have.

Shopping would be no fun if you got to the register to find all your money had been stolen.  Keep your stash safe.  And if you do have an instance where your belongings are stolen, be sure to call your insurance company to see if filing a claim is in your best interest.
